So I had a thought come over me this week about the 3rd Trimester. We are going to figure out where the kids abilities are. By doing so we are going to make math worksheets for ALPHA, BETA, GAMMA, DELTA, EPSILON, ZETA, and PRE-ALGEBRA on Math-you-See website. Each week we will review different lessons in order to find out where the students are. This will allow each student to work at their pace instead of the pace of regular school systems.
STEM Projects have been going well these last few weeks, Art has progressed to painting their own pictures and we had some fun St. Patrick’s Day coloring pages from 123homeschool4me.
End of 2nd Trimester, Renaming School & Group Think
The end of the 2nd Trimester will end next week on the 26th of March. They will enjoy a spring break for 1 week and then enter the 3rd Trimester. The 3rd Trimester will be a little different than the first two because we are becoming an accelerated school WCCB School for Accelerated Learning. Regular schooling does not work with children individually, in fact it separated kids into one or two categories which either keeps them behind or does not allow them to progress.
With the group think of our staff we have come up with a way to allow each child to progress in their own areas of learning. Accelerated learning will include the following subjects: Math, English, Science and History. Each student will be able to find their individual abilities and grow with each subject accordingly. For example: our Second grader reads at a 7th grade level and understands grammar at a 12th grade level, she will be able to move forward with more complex stories and assignments that meet her needs academically. We will decide to get English Literature books for her from 6th to 8th Grade. Our 1st grader has been doing well on math assignments and she may very well progress to 3rd grade math when she enters 2nd grade.
This will allow each student to stay focused in school, drive their interests in learning, and test their abilities in the future. We have found that students want to learn but if they know a subject they get bored and distracted easily causing their grades to fall.
The end of this trimester will include state testing and it will also allow us to see where their abilities are and what they will be learning for the following year.
What Testing do we want to use?
We have not decided which test we would like to use but these are our three choices: P.A.S.S. Test, ACT, or The California Achievement Test. While the P.A.S.S. and the ACT Test is for 3rd through 8th we would still give it to our 2nd Grade student because she has been doing 3rd grade English. We think these options will allow our students to learn and expand their own personal knowledge based on ability and not by their age or their grade.
The P.A.S.S Test was developed specifically for homeschoolers in grades 3 through 8. Like other basic skills tests, it estimates student achievement in the subjects of reading, math, and language. The PASS uniquely has students take a placement test first. This allows students to take a test suited to their abilities rather than simply their age.
The California Achievement Test (CAT) is one of the most widely used of the student assessments for basic academic skills. The CAT provides educators, students and their parents with a measure of achievement and national comparison in reading, language, spelling, and mathematics.
While there is no law we are required as a home school to take exams in California we want the students to be prepared academically when and if they decide to go to college or even high school.
